ISL
Overview:
The Intelligent Service Layer (ISL) is an advanced and powerful platform for building highly distributed and scalable applications. ISL provides the tools to quickly integrate systems, devices, sensors, and data sources, creating solutions where applications adapt to the environment, by detecting automatically new capabilities.
The integration effort has significantly changed with the emergence of pervasive networks, where a vast number of heterogeneous elements need to interoperate, often depending of their context and their location.

While a wide array of traditional integration solutions exist, their limits are challenged:
- They need to evolve from a system based view to a service based model
- Centralized hubs leave the place to distributed, peer to peer architectures
- New applications need to be deployed by quickly integrating large scale distributed applications, maximizing their interoperability
ISL radically reduces cost and risk associated with integrating and managing rapidly changing devices and systems. ISL is a pure Service Oriented platform that complements existing J2EE, .Net and Web Services solutions.

"The Intelligent Service Layer provides an environment for building applications whose capabilities are distributed across small, reusable and modular components. Existing systems and networked devices are rapidly integrated in the solution"
Benefits:
ISL solves the problems of moving from a system oriented to a massively distributed service oriented environment, where systems, devices and users interact. Until now, each wave was based on a model of connecting human users to machines. With the pervasive networks the emphasis is on context awareness and peer to peer interaction. ISL solutions enable:
- Rapid deployment and low total cost of ownership through services reuse and modest skills required for development
- Competitive differentiation by integrating current edge technologies and rapidly integrating with new ones
- Ongoing revenue and cost benefits as new devices emerge and new enterprise systems take advantage of event-generated information
- Protecting investment on middleware products based on J2EE, .Net and Web Services technologies, by extending their reach to support devices and data sources in vast numbers
