Examples of Existing ISL Applications:

ISL is being used by many organizations (both commercial and governmental) to provide large scale interoperability among complex heterogeneous systems. Below are several examples of how ISL is being used to address critical interoperability issues among C4ISR systems.

1. Expeditionary Sensor Grid/Expeditionary Pervasive Sensing

The Navy concept of the Expeditionary Pervasive Sensing (EPS) consists of new expeditionary sensors, processing, and the supporting networks which, when combined with the emerging information infrastructure of our programmed forces (Joint, Coalition, and National), will provide the tactical and operational warfighters with the necessary situational awareness to maintain battle space dominance while rapidly dismantling any potential adversary's anti-access capabilities. ISL provides the enabling technology to support the infrastructure for EPS.

ISL has been extensively evaluated by Navy for the past 2 years in laboratory and nationwide classified testbeds to rapidly integrate information from diverse real and simulated sensors such as P3 and Predator. ISL offers the Navy a foundation for FORCEnet.

2. LumINT: Plug-n-play Component for Intelligence Analysts

LumINT ™ offers a tailored set of best in class, off-the-shelf knowledge discovery and visualization components to speed up the analytical process. LumINT™ is specifically designed in response to the explosive growth of all-source and open source data that Intelligence Community analysts face in the war on terrorism. Delivered through the user's browser and embedded in an agent-based plug-and-play framework, LumINT ™ is designed for enterprise-wide knowledge discovery services in defense, intelligence, homeland security, and law enforcement.

ISL is being used to create a true plug-n-play infrastructure that would allow rapid inclusion of third party products. This unique and revolutionary infrastructure can host Intelligent Software Agents to automate information discovery and allow analyst to manage and harvest actionable intelligence from massive multimedia data.

3. Agents Monitoring Events for Homeland Security and Force Protection

ISL and GITI's Composable Heterogeneous Agents for Intelligent Notification (CHAIN) are being used for the monitoring of sensor data and live operational information. The end users are able to create and launch agents to monitor a very large number of events and specify the thresholds and complex interrelationships between events and when they would like to be notified. This technology offers our customers a highly scalable system for monitoring events in support of homeland defense and Force protections.

4. Coalition Agents Experiment (CoAX)

The aim of the Coalition Agents eXperiment (CoAX) is to address the unique aspects of achieving coherent Coalition operations from diverse 'come-as-you-are' elements. A key operational and technical objective of CoAX is to demonstrate how flexible, timely interaction between different types of (sometimes incompatible) systems and information 'objects' is effectively mediated by agents - leading to agile C2 and improved interoperability. ISL is being used as a critical infrastructure for establishing interoperability among diverse coalition systems.

5. Web-enabled and controlled Robots

GITI developed a proof-of-concept demonstration for integrating inexpensive robots and controlling their behaviors remotely through a web browser. MindStorm robots were wrapped and integrated into an ISL environment. Robots were dynamically registered and discovered. The Service User Interface for controlling and manipulating robots were automatically downloaded to a web browser. Users on the Internet could discover these robots and control them. This technology can be used with more powerful robots to support a variety of applications such as controlling and coordinating behaviors of autonomous (ground or airborne) vehicles for the battlefield .
